My father always took our family to some of the weirdest and most wonderful places in South Africa.

It instilled in us a reverence for the untouched and an appreciation of the historic.

It is for this reason that our shoot at Lake Fundudzi was one of the most gratifying experiences I’ve had in virtual tour production. Not even my dad has been there and we only found it after searching for most part of a day.

Lake Fundudzi is the biggest inland fresh water lake in South Africa and is a sacred place of the vhaVenda people.

It is so sacred that anyone who visits the Lake must approach it backwards while bending at the hip and looking at the lake through their legs. You should try that in the mud.

The history of the lake fascinating  includes everything from human sacrifices, a Python god and mystical white crocodiles. (We really didn’t care what colour they were – as long as they didn’t take exception to a few pictures and stayed in the Lake – we were happy.)

You might also want to explore the our Google Map of the area, by choosing ‘Venda’ from the drop-down menu on the maps page.
